Buying 3 lbs of Cliche Not On The Bill
Cooking. Packing.
Has Any One Else WATCHED - Seirei no Moribito?
I don't want to give away anything (spoilers) but I've found myself hit with some unexpecteds - namely fantasy tale cliches and tropes that I hadn't even realized I'd bought so clearly into.
Anyone reading DARTHS & DROIDS will remember the jokes about the Chancellor with the goatee and how he'll end up evil. I laughed when I read it. But I thought I was able to NOT expect things like that to happen. Like the evil step-mother or the curse on the babe that can be changed slightly but not revoked.
Watching Seirei no Moribito I realized that I've been expecting the crush of the trope that spells doom for the main character. So far the story has CONTINUED, but WITHOUT using those tropes. And each time I've been left utterly confused - happy but utterly confused.
Me: "But... but... this has to happen! S/he has to be evil! S/he has to be wrong! Everyone has to believe this! To the very bitter end! There has to be chaos! Someone has to be assasinated! OMG WTF IS HAPPENING!!!!!"
I'm glad this is happening. It's a bit terrifying - how much I've bought into the tropes, how unaware I've been that I had, how I could have included these into my own writing because of expectation and what came before - because I felt the story could not continue, the plot would not advance with out.
Still, big whoa.
ETA: And 15 mins after writing this, I watch more and discover that they're NOT going to COMPLETELY change around the chain of misunderstandings (or at least I hope it's misunderstandings - if not wtfh?). And man, the crush of disappointment. I laugh at myself.
ETA-Jr: Huh, never mind. Not misunderstandings (of the cliche sort) but Hubris.
