Cause someone decided they weren't getting enough attention....
This and also this and unbelievably but true this all relate to [info]purplepopple here on iJay being an individual who shamelessly and boldly links fannish pseud's to RL Identities and may have a thing for harassing the OTW folk in particular.

I'm not pro OTW. I rather avoid thinking about it where I can.

But people I care about are involved in OTW. It brings them squee.

Calling up BS about how if they have their real identities listed a) anywhere on the net, b) as part of OTW then it's all public property / a simple connection/ wtf ever? That's... I don't even have words for that.

I went to the _fanhistory wiki_ that the outer is promoting and did a quick search to make sure none of the fans I've known and cared for who've since died are in the directory. It wasn't likely since it seems to be build_me_a_wiki_via_bot_&_ff.net profiles_ but I needed to double-check.

It's been asked that folk not link to the _fanhistory wiki_ because doing so pushes up the page's google-rankings.

Just today I posted about how I view fandom vs how other people seem to be viewing it and the 'Cult of Nice'. And yet I don't think there's anyone who believes in reviews and recs (or concrit for that matter) who'd be all for linking identities.

JC, Mary, Joseph and the Prophet Elijah. That's some bold faced vindictiveness.

If you want more information please do read the links, on LJ or not. Because those are well phrased and spaced explanations of what's going on. This right here is as coherent as I get before the cussing starts.

I so agree with the cussing.

That's horrifying. I feel so naive; I'd been thinking for a while that the fan_history thing was a nice idea. I sounded out my fandom about filling out our page - thank goodness they shot the idea down on the grounds of previous creator-related issues. Because that's one situation where it could be really risky for some people if real names were brought out.

Heck, I nearly friended her because she seemed interesting based on stuff she posted on fanthropology. Don't get me wrong; I'm a little fish in fandom and I don't worry for myself. But I don't want to support somebody who would do that in any respect.

It's like what I've said about comments on a disability forum being quoted out of context and used to stereotype PWDs. YES, anyone can find what is posted online and YES, it's a risk we all take that someone might put all our information together and out or misrepresent us. But that does not mean that people have the right to do it.

I woke up this morning and found out it's actually worse than I'd thought. Fan_history wiki is apparently all about money for the outer. She's been trying together venture capital and is quoted (with links) as being all about selling out email addresses and contact information and disliking OTW because it's non-profit efforts would threaten her monetizing efforts; especially as it would be far more thorough than her bot scraping information.

It's odd but if anything would push me to support OTW it'd be something like this.

I hope this isn't a pattern forming, because it reminds me of that HP Lexicon case... it seems similar in that both are sites which had many contributors and which it's inappropriate to, well, appropriate and treat like the work of a sole creator.

The link is to a protected page - when you say selling out e-mail addresses, do you mean to companies who send spam, or something else?

OTW - I don't know what my stance is; I think they may be on a hiding to nothing in trying to prove that fic is already legal via the "transformative works" definition, but maybe that's just my pessimism. My hope is more that copyright holders will realise just how far it is from doing them any harm, and that it will become a general standard that they know about us but don't sue us. But I don't mind the OTW doing its thing as long as they don't give a bad impression of fandom to the outside world.

My bad on the flocking. Using feeds means I don't often realize when something's flocked.
